Ask The Celebration Advisor:

Hi,

I'm interested in doing a butterfly release for my daughter's service.  I am located in Benton, IL, located directly on I57 South. I'm wondering where the nearest vender would be located and if someone could pick these up for me.  I would pay any amount of money to have them here by 2:00 pm.  I would've requested sooner.  But just learned of this special service. Please please let me know what can be done.  Thank you!

The Celebration Advisor:

Hi Michelle,

Although we do not have a vendor in your area, we have several that butterfly vendors that ships to your area. When ordering butterflies, you can order up to a year in advance, but they also accept orders up to 48 hours in advance and can ship them overnight. However, it's best to place to your order 6-8 weeks in advance. When the butterflies do arrive, don't forget that they need to be kept in a cool, air conditioned room or basement. One or two hours before your event, you can move them from the cool area to an area above 65 degrees. This will warm them up and they will become active. Butterfly releases are a great addition to any event and are simply beautiful.

Celebrate a birthday with butterflies!  Have a BUTTERFLY BIRTHDAY BASH releasing live butterflies.  When planning a butterfly themed birthday party, keep in mind that the temperatures need to be above 60-65 degrees for your butterflies to fly.

It is recommended that the birthday party participants be 5 years of age or older.  A few suggestions include making a butterfly-shaped birthday cake.  Instructions can be found on the internet or created by your local bakery.  Give the guests some packets of easy-to-plant butterfly garden seeds to take home. You can order child-sized or adult-sized butterfly wings from several companies.  A pair of bug glasses and some handmade antennae would complete the outfit.  The guests can make a butterfly craft during the party.  The grande finale would include an outdoor butterfly release.  Each participant can release one individually, or you may choose to release them all at one time from a decorative cage.  You may want to have someone else plan your butterfly party as your time may be limited.

Planning a wedding, whether it involves 50 people or 500 people, can be a stressful time.  You want your guests to remember your wedding as a day filled with happiness and enchantment.

How Butterflies Can Make Your Wedding Memorable

One unique effect can be achieved through a live butterfly release.  As a beautiful and environmentally-sound alternative to blowing bubbles, throwing rice or birdseed or releasing balloons, a butterfly release will make your day memorable!  Can you imagine the magnificence of dozens of colorful butterflies winging their way skyward as a grand finale to your wedding ceremony?  The release of nature's prettiest creatures is a symbolic way to celebrate any number of occasions, including weddings, proms, parties, and quinceanera.  Butterflies have always been thought of as bringing good luck to people and everyone loves butterflies.

One way to involve your guests is to have a "butterfly attendant" hand out the envelopes in which the butterflies are temporarily kept.  When the signal is given, each person opens their envelopes and the butterflies fly out to create a magnificent display.  Some butterflies, especially monarchs, may alight on your guests.  When released, they have a slow and graceful flight.  They are actually "social butterflies!"

On a smaller scale, butterflies can be used as table centerpieces, enclosed in elegant see-through "cages" where they flutter about until time for their release.  Guests are always enchanted by this distinctive and unusual display of beauty.

How To Care For and Release Butterflies

Butterflies are carefully raised by farmers, who then package them in small Styrofoam coolers before shipping them overnight to your door.  Since they are cold-blooded, they are resting and dormant while in the cooler.  Exposure to warm temperatures will make them active and ready to fly. They must be released outdoors during daylight and during months where the temperatures are high enough for them to fly ~ above 60 degrees.  Care of the butterflies is minimal; you just keep the container cool for a night by refreezing and replacing the cold pack that comes with each shipment.  Very few butterflies expire before their release and usually one or more "extras" are included in your order.  Most butterfly farmers hold permits to ship several species across state lines.  The butterflies you release will be indigenous to your state and will most probably live for a few weeks, finding each other after they are released, mating and helping to repopulate the species.

A butterfly farmer will help you choose the butterflies that are right for your state, your budget and your special occasion.

Wedding receptions typically end with the bride and groom leaving under a shower of rice, birdseed or bubbles. But why not do something over-the-top that you and your guests will never forget? Imagine the feeling of running hand-in-hand with your new husband through hundreds or thousands of butterflies in flight. Imagine the delight of your guests as they watch them rise in the air and flutter all around.

While a butterfly release may be a little more costly than birdseed or bubbles, the impact is definitely bigger and unforgettable. Keep the butterfly release a surprise—even from your bridal party—and watch the surprised looks on their faces as the surprise unfolds. You could even "tease" your guests by using the symbolic butterfly on your wedding program, invitations, wedding cake, and reception flowers as a hint of what is to come.

Many brides and grooms put so much focus on their entrances to the ceremony and reception, but spend little effort thinking about their exit from the reception. A butterfly release is a surprising way to leave you and your guests feeling uplifted, encouraged and hopeful about the future. As a butterfly in flight symbolizes new beginnings, so do weddings and this is a great way to add an exclamation point to your wedding day.
