Checklist for Hiring Disc Jockeys

  • Always meet face to face with your Disc Jockey.
  • Always get references and contact references.
  • Always agree on what is expected of the Disc Jockey and what the Disc Jockey expects or needs from you.
  • Always negotiate all of the costs ahead of time. Some disc jockeys have party packages, some work hourly and some require extra money for traveling.
  • Always get a contract in writing including the details of what you need from the disc jockey and what the disc jockey needs from you.
  • Always make sure the details include:
    • Date
    • Time (be specific as to when the set up and take down of equipment will be)
    • When the disc jockey will start and end and break times
    • Any special electrical or stage needs or other accommodations
    • Music styles and choices
    • Any other extra entertainment the disc jockey will perform, such as dancing, MC duties
    • For wedding or other specialized parties clarify timing of special songs
  • Always ask about sound levels, nothing ruins the atmosphere at your party more than music to loud or to quite for the event. Prior to the actual party agreed on a sound level and if possible test the sound level at the location of the event.
  • Always ask questions! If your not sure ask.
  • Always remember that the disc jockey works for you. They may make suggestions but the ultimate decision is yours.
