Ever wonder why some wedding invitations come in two envelopes? Early in history the postal service wasn’t as trusted in delivery of mail as it is today. A double envelope was used to protect the invitation. The invitation was placed in one envelope and then another that was addressed. Upon delivery a servant would open the outer addressed envelope and then deliver the inner envelope containing the invitation to the head of house. Even though the postal service is much more trusted today, this double envelope is still a tradition for many invitations.
Why do some invitations come with a small piece of tissue paper? Back in the 1600’s metal printing plates we used and the ink would smear, so placing a small sheet of tissue paper over the wording on the invitation kept the wording form smearing.
