Religious Wedding Officiates

Unlike civil weddings, religious wedding ceremonies are performed by a wedding officiate appointed by the church or some other religious organization. Depending on the bride and groom’s religious preference, the minister, priest, or rabbi chosen will reflect the couple’s spiritual beliefs through scripture readings, rituals, and traditions as much as they desire. Choosing a wedding officiate can sometimes be a hard decision to make for the couple. If the couple has different spiritual backgrounds, whether different religious beliefs or just different denominations, deciding on a wedding officiate can require long discussions and research. Wedding and Party Network has researched some of the key traditions and practices of wedding officiates such as ministers, preachers, priests, and rabbis that make each of their ceremonies unique. Catholic Priests

The traditional Catholic wedding begins with readings from the Old and New Testament of the Bible, which is read by the priest or honored guests of the wedding party. Following scripture readings, the priest may then elaborate on the marriage theme incorporating personal reference if the priest is familiar with the couple. After the exchange of vows, a double ring ceremony is performed. A Prayer of the Faithful lead by the priest follows which may also include a personal prayer by the bride and groom. During a Mass, the Liturgy of the Eucharist is said at this time. Those who are chosen to bring gifts of wine and bread to the altar carry out their role at this point. The conclusion of a Catholic wedding ends with a Lord’s Prayer and blessing from the priest.

Ministers, Pastors, and Preachers

Christian weddings are presided over by a Christian minister, pastor, or preacher. These ceremonies usually begin with scripture reading from the Bible that is read by the wedding officiate or a chosen guest. Following the scripture reading, the minister or pastor presents a marriage related message with reference to God. Following the pastor’s message, the exchange of rings and vows takes place. If a unity candle is to be lit, it would follow the exchange of vows. The ceremony is closed with the presentation of the bride and groom by the minister or pastor.

Rabbi

A Jewish wedding is a ceremony presided over by a rabbi. A rabbi is an official in the Jewish religion who can read Hebrew and knows Jewish law and is considered the teacher. The rabbi begins the wedding ceremony by reciting the two wedding blessings. The ketubah is then read followed by the seven blessings, or Sheva Brachot. Today, a second rabbi or another honored guest is given the privilege of reading the ketubah, and seven other people are given the honor of reciting the blessings. The ceremony concludes when the groom breaks a glass underfoot.
