Why do you place a penny in the bride’s shoe? The wedding tradition of placing a penny in the bride’s shoe was made popular with a Victorian rhyme – something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a sixpence in your shoe. Over the years, the term sixpence has been replaced with the term penny. In this rhyme, the penny was used to ensure the wealth and good fortune of the couple. In some European cultures, this penny was saved by the bride; later given to her daughter on her wedding day. Arras Coins- A Hispanic wedding tradition of 13 coins.

Arras in Spanish means pledge. Thirteen gold coins (arras) are given by the groom to the bride during the marriage ceremony. The groom giving the coins signifies his willingness to support her and trust in her. The bride accepting them signifies her willingness to trust him and be prudent.

Some say the thirteen coins represent thirteen words; Love, peace, commitment, trust, respect, joy, happiness, nurturing, caring, harmony, wholeness, harmony, and cooperation. Others believe it is representative of the 12 Apostles and Christ. Yet, others see it as the lunar calendar of 12 months and the 13 as the honeymoon. Whatever the tradition stems from, it is a beautiful part of the Hispanic wedding ceremony.

El Lazo Wedding Tradition

El Lazo (the Lasso) Mexican Wedding Tradition

A lasso (El lazo) is used in traditional Hispanic wedding ceremonies to symbolize unity. This tradition probably came from seventh century Spain. A rope, ribbon, cord or large rosary is draped around the neck of the groom then the bride in a figure eight after they exchange vows. Often the Padrinos (Godparents) have the honor of draping the lasso during the wedding ceremony. In some ceremonies the lasso is draped around the wrists instead of the neck. To symbolize the forever binding of love and marriage, the couple wears the lasso until the end of the ceremony. After the ceremony the Lasso is removed either by the Padrinos (Godparents) or the priest. The Lasso is then given to the bride for her to keep as a memento of her status as mistress to her husbands heart and home.

This is one tradition that is very much common place in Mexican weddings, especially in Mexican-American weddings.

Snowy Surprise Engagement

As a working single mom with two boys and two jobs I have very little time to set aside for my boyfriend. He’d asked me to take a weekend off, I asked him to settle for one night. I was told to pack warm outer wear and a bathing suit(it was December). At noon we headed off to Silver star where a room with hottub was on our own veranda. I was happy to sit in the tub while the snow fell. At 5 PM I was instructed to be in the lodge dressed warm. Outside the doors of the lodge was a sleigh covered in jingle bells and lights pulled by Belgian horses. We rode for approx 5 kms to a cabin in the woods lit entirely in candles, he’d packed in my favorite wine and we stayed for a three course meal and carolling. We then got back on the sleigh where he presented me by flashlight with a card that expressed how I fit in his life, then he got down on one knee and proposed and I don’t remember if the sleigh stopped or time stopped all I can remember is the twinkle in his eyes, the sparkle of the snow and of course the ring!

Outdoor Hiking Honeymoon

We are avid outdoor lovers, so a honeymoon that included the wonders of the outdoors was necessary. After our wedding reception we drove to Petit Jean State Park (in Morrilton Arkansas). We rented a cabin and spent our days enjoying the flora and fauna on the hiking trails. We spent the nights dining by the glow coming from the fireplace. Surrounded by nature and the seclusion of our cabin was so romantic. I highly recommend honeymoon ideas that involve the outdoors.

Video Game Tournament For Teenagers

As a dad of 15 year old boy, I wanted to give my son a congratulations party for having such good grades ( all A’s in advanced curriculum). Knowing how he enjoys playing video games, I decided a Guitar Hero tournament party would be suitable. I felt I could handle 15-18 teenagers at this video game party. I rented 1 extra game player at my local video game rental store, to go with the one we already had.
