Give Your Party the Luck 'O the Irish!
St. Patrick's Day is coming and that means green clothes, shamrocks (still green) and … well, beer (also available in green)! I know there are reasons to celebrate St. Patty's more serious than clothes and beer, but the historical reasons for the holiday are not exactly fun per se. And aren't we talking about a party? Why yes, I think we are. So get ready for some exciting St. Patty's Day inspiration!
A Study in Green
This will probably come as no surprise, but your St. Patty's Day celebration should be themed in green. That's a simple enough concept, and the execution is no more complicated. So what do you do?
- Decorations – Here's your chance to use that green tinsel you've only ever utilized around Christmas. You can also buy any number of fun decoration options from some of our party supply vendors.
- Beer – Where do you get green beer? In recent years it's not been hard to find at all. You can go to your local corner market and find holiday themed beer, but I can't guarantee the flavor of such a brew. The best way to get green beer you know you'll like is to take a beer you already love and add some green food-coloring. It shouldn't change the flavor much, if at all and will leave your suds a lovely holiday shade.
- Food – A popular dish is Irish Soda Bread. It's easy to make and obtaining the green tinge you're going for is a breeze. Just use the same bit of food-coloring you dripped into the beer and you'll have a colorful and tasty snack to serve to your guests.
Popular Irish Traditions
Another way to honor the Irish origins of the holiday is to incorporate some Irish traditions in your celebrations. Not sure what kind of traditions to use? Here are a few ideas.
- Irish Toast – No, not bread. A "raise your glass" toast! There are a plethora of traditional Irish toasts (a quick search on the internet will yield plenty) and nothing will do more to add a bit of Irish flavor to your social interaction.
- Potatoes – Yep, good ole spuds. You can prepare these any way you like because Irish and potato go hand-in-hand, but if you want a traditional Irish dish, you might try boxty or colcannon. Colcannon even has a traditional song!
- Music – Irish music in the background of your festivities will do wonders for setting the right tone. And if you're not into the traditional stuff, check out Irish rock n roll or other genres with an Irish twist.
Overall, a St. Patrick's Day party isn't a difficult event to throw. Make sure you have plenty of beer (and I mean the Irish versions of course) and a large group of friends and it's guaranteed to be successful!
St. Patrick's Day: Go Green!
St. Patrick's Day: The Feast of Saint Patrick
Celebrated on the 17th of March, St. Patrick's Day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. It also is a celebration of Irish culture in general. There are parades and festivals, and people celebrating usually wear green and decorate with shamrocks. Whether you traditionally celebrate St. Patrick's Day or not, you can still make the day all about the color green. Here are some ways to play up the color green on March 17th!
Green Breakfast!
Possibly the best way to start off the day is by having a spread of green food for everyone to enjoy when they wake up. It doesn't have to be much; make some yummy pancakes with green food coloring, blend up some "green" smoothies with spinach and various fruit, or get a little creative with green eggs and ham. Adults and kids alike love a little variety at breakfast, and this gives you a chance to introduce your kids to the holiday if they aren't familiar with it.
Green Style
This one is simple. Let your kids pick out their own green outfit for the day! If you don't quite trust that their choices (however innocent they may be) will be school-appropriate, pick out different articles for them to choose from and put together into a complete outfit. Show them how you've put together your own green outfit and encourage their individual sense of style.
A Green Craft
When your kids get home from school that day get a small craft together for them to enjoy. Their school may have already incorporated some St. Patrick's celebration into their day, so don't feel like you need to go all out. Just make a memory with them that you can keep on file. Here's an example:
- Coffee Clovers – Grab a basic coffee filter and trace a shamrock for you or your little one to cut. Pour some liquid watercolor paint into a cup or bowl and give your child a water dropper. For your older children, challenge them to control their squeezes by dropping one drop of paint at a time onto the shamrock. The result will be a green clover as the coffee filter absorbs the paint!
So, what are your plans for this St. Patrick's Day? Hopefully it involves all things green!

Where Did They Come From?
March is the month of green, rainbows and St. Patrick's Day. This holiday is a tradition for everyone. So, wear green and don't get pinched. Along with the color green and leprechauns, this is also a great holiday to plan a party for. However, do you ever take a deeper look into the holiday, instead of just planning a party. Where do these traditions come from and where did it originate from? Wedding and Party Network is bringing you St. Patrick's Day traditions and where they originated.
Corned Beef & Cabbage – Eating corned beef and cabbage represents a day of exemption of the meat-free rule during lent. However, this is actually not the original feast of the Irish, their meal actually consisted of bacon and cabbage. Bacon was actually a pricier meat and considered a luxury. The idea of corned beef was obtained from Jewish immigrants and has since been the favored tradition.
Saint Patrick's Day Parade – The parade dates back to the mid 1700s when the Irish contingency would hold a march to celebrate the holiday. The first large-scale parade took place on March 17, 1762 in New York City. Now, this parade is the largest St. Patrick's day parade which attracts over 150,000 participants and over 2 million viewers.
The Color Green –One of the biggest traditions that comes along with this holiday is the color green. Where does it come from and why is it such a big staple for this holiday? The color green was actually not always the case during this holiday. However, many of the symbols have the color green, including the shamrock, leprechauns and the unofficial Irish flag. The tradition of wearing green actually just appeared within the last few decades and apparently derived from school children.

It's A Good Luck Party
With St. Patrick's Day coming up, now is the time to start planning a party. However, it doesn't have to be all about green and rainbows. Think about putting a fun twist on your theme party with a good luck theme. Wedding and Party Network has a few tips on making this party fun for everyone.
What You'll Need:
- Prizes
- Red Envelope Party Invitations
- Piggy Banks
- Good Luck Charms
- Party Decor
- Deck Of Cards
- Food & Beverages
- Pennies
- Printed Instructions for Party Games
First things first, set a date and send out the invitations. Send your party invitations that contain all the party details in small red envelopes, which is a sign of good luck in Asian culture. Within the invitation, explain the theme of the party and ask them to bring a few lucky coins and charms.
Next, you're going to be decorating for your party. Think about decorating with items that represent luck, like a pot of gold, rainbows, horse shoe, rabbit's foot four-leaf clover and other items. Your party decorations don't have to be over the top, just think about setting out fun floral arrangements that feature different lucky items.
Plan out the party food. You can definitely carry the luck theme throughout your food and beverages. Think about what you may eat on New Year's Day and carry it throughout your food. Make appetizers that feature black eye peas, cabbage, noodles, lentils, grapes, legumes, pork, fish, cakes or pomegranate. All these foods represent good luck in different cultures.
Of course, with this party, there has to be party activities. One idea is that whenever guests order drinks, pull out a deck of cards, let them choose one face down to use as a coaster and whoever has the highest card at the end of the night wins a prize, which can be a lucky charm or a mini piggy bank.
You can also do a flip of pennies. Guests can pair up and whoever guesses the correct way the coin lands, either on heads or tails, wins. Another game is to place lucky charms into a basket and have guests draw one out and explain why that item is lucky, they can either tell the truth or bluff and guests can call them out on it if it's not the truth or if they do believe them.
Now, for the fun part of the party. Place two piggy banks close to the front door and let guests know that one is for charity and the other is a prize that one of them will get to take home. Fill it with pennies and have your guests place their coins in there as well that you asked them to bring. You can either have people guess how many coins are in one and they're the winner or you can make it a prize for one of the other party games. Either way, it's a great prize and one goes to a good cause.
You'll find lots of ideas out there for your lucky themed party and many charms that represent luck. This party is a neat way to learn about different cultures and just to spend a great evening in together and enjoying laughs.

"Luck Be With You" Treasure Hunt
St. Patrick's Day is approaching and green, clovers and gold will be coming along with it. Think green, luck, rainbows, leprechaun, four leaf clovers and gold. All the traditional items you think about when St. Patrick's Day rolls around. Well, incorporate these items into a party theme that provides something unique this year for your party, and host a treasure hunt. Wedding and Party Network is here to help you create a lucky treasure hunt your guests will enjoy. It's a great idea, just have your guests follow the rainbow.
Treasure Hunt Clues
First thing you'll want to decide is do you want to make it a scavenger hunt or a real treasure hunt with a map. Either way, you'll be able to use the same clues for both. Next, sit down and write out all the things that are associated with St. Patrick's Day. These can range from any items, such as:- Four Leaf Clover – Find me 4 some luck.
- Leprechauns – Fiddly, diddly, quickly catch me.
- Pot Of Gold – You would LOVE to find me at the end of a rainbow.
- Rainbows – Bright & colorful, but only when it rains.
- Blarney Stone – Kiss me & maybe you'll receive some luck.
- Irish Flag – Square with all the colors of Ireland
- Top Hat – Black with a hint of gold.
- Any Green Items
Use these clues to help point your guests in the right direction. Place small items that are sort of hidden for them to find, once they find it; they will be led to the next item. At the end of the treasure hunt, create a giant rainbow to let them know they are at the end. Place a big pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, just like you hear every St. Patrick's Day. This giant pot of gold will be the winning prize. You could easily make this yourself, just grab a bucket or basket and spray paint it black. Fill it up with chocolate gold coins, or real ones and green items.
Your guests will truly have a ball with this St. Patty's Day treasure hunt. It has to be the first thing to do, since guests will arrive full of anticipation. Doing it first also allows for your guests to have something exciting to talk about afterward over your delicious green party food. It fits the theme and is something unique. Plus, your guests will be able to get out of the house from those winter months if it's a nice day out. This party will be a hit!
Winning Dishes
After the treasure hunt, your guests may have worked up a hungry stomach. If you run around outside for the hunt, stick with a soup to warm your guests up. Possibly a butternut squash soup. This shows off a hint of gold and can be your pot of gold soup. This recipe is just a fun way to stick with the theme. Stick with traditional Irish food, like corned beef, cabbage or shepherds pie.
You may want to stick with traditional appetizers. One way for these party foods to fit the theme is to die them green and gold. All it takes is a bit of food coloring and you'll have some St. Patrick's Day party food.
For dessert, stick with rainbow and green cupcakes. Place a gold coin, shamrock or gold coin on top of the cupcake for a little extra touch. Visit your local bakery to have them create you a pot of gold party cake. Wouldn't this be so fun at this party? Have them create a pot filled with gold coins, a rainbow over top and a leprechaun by the pot of gold.
If you haven't a clue on what to serve or what type of desserts you'll need, talk with your local caterer and your local baker. They would be glad to help you in throwing a successful party!
For this St. Patrick's Day Party, all you'll need is the treasure hunt and some delicious food. These will be the two elements to make your party a big hit! Don't forget to wear your green and follow the rainbow to that big pot of gold!

Luck Be With Ye This Year – St. Patty's Day Party Inspiration
Now that Valentine's Day is behind us, it's time to get into the real swing of things for St. Patrick's Day.
Ah, St. Patrick's Day. That's lovable holiday that encourages everyone and their mother to wear green clothes, get green contact lenses, dye their hair green, dye their dogs green (I've seen it), and other all-too-chlorophyll-colored shenanigans. Speaking of shenanigans, we're spotlighting "luck" in this month's Wedding And Party Newsletter. As a preface to all of the goodies on the inside, here's a little taste of what you can expect this holiday.
Green is the theme. So go all out with green beverages, food and decorations. Don't forget our favorite St Paddy's Day character – the leprechaun and his pot of gold. A cute St Paddy's decoration idea can be accomplished by hanging multi-colored streamers (rainbow) above a gold punch bowl filled with green punch on your beverage table. Freeze a ring of ice with gold coins, plastic shamrocks, or even real ones to make it even more festive! Real shamrocks are edible, they just don't taste good. (A good substitute would be fresh mint leaves.) Place a cardboard cut-out of a leprechaun on the table to complete the look.
What Irish celebration is complete without strong beverages? The traditional whiskey, Guinness or a good green beer should do the trick. If you don't like beer, dye ginger ale for the same effect.
For a fun, Irish themed dinner party set up a potato bar. These are becoming super popular for wedding receptions, but why not steal this stud-tastic idea for your St. Paddy's party. Set out a hot plate with a mound of baked potatoes in the center of your table and surround it with all the favorite potato fixin's: several kinds of cheeses, sour cream, fresh chives, bacon bits, butter, the list goes on and on. You could always serve more traditional Irish foods like corn beef and cabbage too.
Desserts for St. Patrick's day are a blast to make! Think green! Dye your desserts green. Shamrock-shaped cookies, cakes or cupcakes decorated with green icing and lots of green sprinkles, plastic shamrock toys, or other festive decorations. Have fun with it!
After you and all your guests are full of whiskey and green food, try a few Irish Drinking Songs to really put you in the spirit of the Irish. Search YouTube for several, easy to learn ones you can teach your friends. Of course if it's a really good Irish party, by the end of the night you'll be making up your own!
"He must have been an admiral a sultan or a king,
and to his praises we shall always sing.
Look what he has done for us he's filled us up with cheer!
Lord bless Charlie Mops, the man who invented beer beer beer
tiddly beer beer beer."
Have a safe and happy Saint Patrick's Day! May "the luck of the Irish be with ya!"
