Wedding cakes are one of the main centerpieces at ay wedding reception. The latest trend emerging is textured wedding cakes. What do we mean by this? Brides are including metallic gold foiling, lace like textures, etched and even a wooden texture within their wedding cakes. It's all about creating a show stopping cake. What are your plans for your wedding cake?
Trending Tuesday – Naked Wedding Cakes
What are we talking about when we say naked wedding cakes? These cakes have icing on the inside but not on the outside. They have exposed crumbs. The theory behind this is it's more natural. Couples normally choose to feature berries on top, rosemary, lavender or succulents. You also have to be careful with your flavors and fillings. Why? It'll basically determine what your cake will look like since cakes and frostings have various colors. Make sure the colors go together. Other than that, have fun with it. Just because it doesn't have frosting or added bling doesn't mean it won't be a show stopper.
Inspirational Friday – Wedding Cake Toppers
Today's bride is leaning towards non-traditional in many aspects of her wedding. You can get as unique as you'd like, even down to the smallest detail. One tiny detail that has been changing is the wedding cake topper.
Instead of the classic bride and groom at the top of the wedding cake, brides are changing to a multitude of toppers to make their personality shine through. Some use coral as their topper to complete their beach wedding while others use bride and groom decorated cake pops. Whatever you decide for your topper, let it be a reflection of you and your future spouse to make your cake even more special. Put the Cup in Cake
The colors are endless, the design, unlimited and the price is right! Cupcakes are a great alternative, especially for that DIY bride who is looking for a less expensive way to do her wedding cake. Cake ball. Two words, one love. If you have never had a cake ball, get to your closest bakery and find one! Think cupcake, but bite size and round. Brides are getting creative by putting the cake balls on a stick and calling it a cake pop. Then, putting the cake pop's in cardboard tiers to make a cake pop galore display! Cookies, Filling and Oh So Thrilling!
Wedding cake with a twist… literally. One of my good friends and her husband both have an incomparable love for Oreo's. They would pick Oreo's over cake any day, and especially on their wedding day. The cake was perfect, including the colors. Their bridal party wore black and white so the colors matched perfectly. An added bonus, they had tiny shot glasses of milk to make the perfect dessert.
For Those of Us Who Can't Pick Just One…
If you're like me, (and you probably are because you're searching for wedding cake alternatives) you couldn't pick just one design with one flavor of cake. My reception was in a home, so I chose to do a cake table with three different cakes.
First was my wedding cake, which was vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream icing, dressed with fresh candied violets. Next, a chocolate cake with chocolate icing and salted caramel drizzle. And third, vanilla butternut cream cake with vanilla butternut icing. This one was a special, heirloom recipe that's been in my family for years. We usually only get it at Christmas, but my mom decided to make an exception just this once.We set the cakes on different tiers of crystal and silver cake stands for a beautiful display, and added fresh flowers all around! So, if you can't settle on just one, having multiple cake options is always a plus.
Pie in the Sky Cake
And no, I'm not talking about pizza! Ever heard of a Moon Pie? Yes you read that right, a Moon Pie. It's marshmallow pie sandwich, which is a speciality in Mobile, Alabama. I saw a wedding where the couple was proud of their Mobile and Moon Pie heritage, so they decided to have their groom's cake made entirely out of the tasty graham cracker and marshmallow dessert! I thought it was a grand idea to showcase the history of the city they loved and of course their love for this delectable dessert.
So are you feeling better now about your non-traditional ways? Maybe show this blog to your conventional mother to help her see that your alternative wedding cake can be as elegant as the old-fashioned ways, but with a new a modern twist! Happy eating!
The Changing Face of Wedding Cake Decorations
Wedding cake decorations are becoming increasingly unique, but altogether still the same good ol' stuff that your parents and grandparents loved. When discussing your wedding cake ideas with a local bakery, consider these trends concerning wedding cake styles, frosting and cake toppers.
A Glimpse at Traditional Wedding Cakes
Traditional wedding cakes are beautifully formed of either buttercream frosting or fondant icing. Cake toppers typically centered around the bride and groom standing together arm-in-arm as if standing at the altar. White wedding cakes were popular, both as the choice of flavor and icing color. Decorations were elegant but simple; not understated nor over the top. These are beautiful wedding cakes for any reception, but their classic style has since been pushed to the side by more original, unique wedding cakes.
Take A Peek At Popular Modern Wedding Cakes
Wedding cakes for the modern bride tend to take on a very different appearance. Wedding cake ideas are limitless as the modern bride favors unique cake designs that showcase personality and style. Cake toppers range from a groom dipping his bride to kissing couples. Monogrammed cake toppers are also used often. The idea surrounding modern wedding cakes is that each should be a reflection of the bride, so creative designs are very popular.
Ever The Same For Wedding Cake Components
Buttercream frosting and fondant icing are still popular, but modern wedding cakes take these two classic components to the next level. Contemporary cake designs offer a wide range of designs that call for creative use of both sweet treats. Your local wedding cake bakeries can offer more details about the differences between buttercream and fondant. Regardless, fondant wedding cakes and cakes with buttercream icing will forever grace the food tables at wedding receptions.
Cake toppers may look slightly different these days but their popularity as the crowning feature of the wedding cake remains the same. Whether embracing one another as a couple or declaring the initial of the couple's surname, cake toppers are among the most well received wedding cake decorations.
Which Popular Wedding Cake Theme Fits You?
Let Your Heritage Add Spice To Your Wedding Cake
Cultural wedding cake themes are seeing a big rise in popularity as wedding ceremonies reflect the ethnic traditions of the bride and groom. As more and more couples tap into their heritage to inspire their celebration, wedding cakes are also following suit with an increase in cultural wedding cakes. This could include a red and white wedding cake for Chinese couples following the traditions of lucky colors and other similar practices. When heritage and ethnicity play an important role at the wedding, discuss how to incorporate many of these traditions with your wedding cake bakery.
A Seasonal Theme Deserves A Seasonal Wedding Cake
Seasonal themed wedding cakes are also very popular. Fall wedding cakes make excellent use of bronze, amber, burnt reds and similar colors. Falling fondant leaves cascading down tiers of colorful wedding cake is a portion of the wedding reception that no autumn bride should be without.
Seasonal wedding cakes are also appropriate and beautiful for the other seasons of the year. Winter wedding cakes, summer wedding cakes, and spring wedding cakes each bring their own unique set of shades to the palette but every pairing is as beautiful as the next. Each hue creates a unique dimension that brings to life the season of the wedding. What a great way to celebrate the day and the time of year!
Make It Funky-Unusual Wedding Cakes Are In Now
Unusual wedding cakes are also becoming very popular. Tiers that appear to be skewed are a fun alternative to traditional pieces. Heart shaped wedding cakes add an extra dose of romance and flair to the reception. Whatever the shape and style, unusual wedding cakes are seeing a big boost among brides wishing to have a truly unique wedding.
Celebrate Your Roots With A Location-Specific Wedding Cake
Don't forget location specific themes for the wedding cake! Everyone loves a good bit of dessert, but themed wedding cakes stand out with their fun and quirky appearance. Beach destination weddings are very popular as are the beach wedding cakes that come with them. Another popular style remains with western wedding cakes. A fondant cowboy boot atop buttercream delight is a tasty way for everyone to celebrate nuptials. Don't be scared to contact your local wedding cake bakery about the many different location-specific themes for your cake.
Let Them Eat Colorful Wedding Cakes!
Following in the footsteps of just about every other wedding accessory trend is the modern popularity of using color on the wedding cake. From pretty in pink wedding cakes to tiers of frosting and cake in blue hues, every color of the rainbow (and sometimes even rainbow patterns) can appear on the wedding cake.
So what makes colorful wedding cakes such a big deal? Traditional weddings taking place even a generation ago rarely strayed from creamy tones of icing and white wedding cake. While this style is still beautiful and Continue reading "Let Them Eat Colorful Wedding Cakes!" »
